About Declan Murray
Sportsbook Analyst — Hamilton, Ontario
Tested with real deposits, $50-200 per site
My Story
I grew up in Hamilton watching the Ti-Cats with my dad every Labour Day weekend, so betting on sports was never far from my mind. After graduating from McMaster with a degree in finance, I spent four years working in risk analysis at a Toronto fintech firm before realising I was spending more time reading sportsbook terms and conditions than actual financial reports. That’s when I made the switch. For the past four years, I’ve been depositing my own money — typically $50 to $200 per platform — into every AGCO-licensed sportsbook in Ontario. I test the signup flow, read every clause in the T&Cs, track how long withdrawals actually take versus what they promise, and calculate the real expected value of every offer. I’m not here to sell you on anything. I’m here because I got burned by a stake-not-returned clause on my very first free bet back in 2022, and I don’t want that happening to anyone else. When I’m not breaking down wagering requirements, you’ll find me at Tim Hortons Field or arguing about whether the Leafs will ever win a Cup again. Spoiler: I keep betting they will.
From Furniture to Fine Print
Before I started analysing sportsbook terms full-time, I ran a small e-commerce site selling furniture and home decor in Ontario. Turns out the same attention to detail that helped me spot overpriced accent chairs translates pretty well to spotting overpriced wagering requirements.
My Testing Process
Every sportsbook review on StrokeScore follows the same three-week protocol. Week one covers signup, identity verification, and deposit testing via Interac e-Transfer. Week two is dedicated to live betting across NHL, NBA, CFL, and whatever niche markets the platform offers. Week three is all about withdrawals — I make multiple cashout requests at different times and on different days to check consistency.
I deposit my own money, typically C$50 to C$200 per platform. I read every clause in the terms and conditions. I calculate the real expected value of every offer using standard probability models. I cross-reference odds against sharp benchmark lines from Pinnacle. I track withdrawal processing times to the minute.
I do this because I got burned early. My very first free bet in 2022 had a stake-not-returned clause I didn't understand, and I lost money I thought was mine. That experience is why StrokeScore exists — to make sure other Ontario bettors don't make the same mistake.
Why I Only Review AGCO-Licensed Sportsbooks
Every platform on StrokeScore is licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and operates through iGaming Ontario. That means segregated player funds, mandatory responsible gambling tools, formal dispute resolution, and terms that are legally binding from the moment you opt in. I don't review offshore or grey-market operators because if something goes wrong, you have no recourse. With AGCO-licensed books, you do.
